How to play

Fair Mines is a minesweeper online game that never punishes you for bad luck. Open cells, read the numbers, and flag every mine to clear the board. The rules are the ones you know: a number tells you how many mines touch that cell.

The difference is that the mines are not placed when the game starts. Every time you open a cell, the game checks what the numbers on screen still allow. If there is a cell that logic proves is safe and you open a different cell that could hold a mine, it will be a mine. If no cell can be proven safe, a guess next to the numbers will come up empty unless that cell is certainly a mine. Your first tap is never a mine.

There are four sizes, from Easy (8×8, 8 mines) to Brutal (10×10, 50 mines). Hint tells you whether a safe cell exists. After a loss, the board shows which cells were safe, which were mines and which could have gone either way, and Undo lets you step back and try again.

Fair Mines is a modified version of the open-source Kaboom by Paweł Marczewski, released under the MIT License. It uses the MiniSat solver (MIT License). For physoe we redrew the board, added a dig/flag switch for phones, a hint button and Chinese text. The original copyright and license notices are included with the game files.

Controls

Desktop

Click a cell to open it and right-click to flag it, or switch the mode button to Flag. Click a number to open its neighbours once its flags are placed.

Mobile

Tap a cell to open it. Long-press, or switch the mode button to Flag, to place a flag. Tap a number to open the cells around it.

Tips

  1. 1Start each move by asking whether any cell is certainly safe. If one exists, find it before you guess.
  2. 2Compare two numbers that share neighbours. The difference often tells you exactly where the mines are.
  3. 3When Hint says no cell is safe for sure, guess next to the numbers rather than in the middle of the unknown area.
  4. 4Turn on safe mode in Options if you keep opening cells by accident.

FAQ

Only when the numbers leave no provably safe cell. In that case a guess next to the numbers is safe, unless that cell is certainly a mine.

Because a provably safe cell existed elsewhere. The game punishes guessing while logic still has an answer. Undo and look again.

Green cells were safe, red cells were mines, and yellow cells could have been either.

Easy 8×8 with 8 mines, Normal 10×10 with 20, Hard 10×15 with 35 and Brutal 10×10 with 50.

Turn on "Allow guessing anywhere" in Options. Without it, guesses away from the numbers are treated as unsafe.
